Outlook Express Mail Import Instructions

Although IntelliMover moved your Outlook Express email messages from your old computer to your new one, it may not have been able to integrate these messages into the updated Outlook Express application you have installed on your new computer. If, after starting Outlook Express on your new computer, you do not see the email messages that you transferred from your old computer, follow the instructions outlined on this Web site to manually import the messages into Outlook Express.

  1. Make sure that Windows Explorer is set to "Show all hidden files and folders" in all directories.

    To set Windows Explorer to always show hidden files and folders on a Windows 98, Windows 98SE, or Windows ME computer, follow these steps: (If you are using a Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer, click here for instructions.)

    • Right-click Start in the Windows toolbar.
    • Click Explore

    • Click View
    • Click Folder Options

    • Click the View tab.
    • Select Show hidden files and folders
    • Click the Like Current Folder button.

    • Click Yes in the "Folder Views" confirmation window.

    • Skip to Step 2.

    To set Windows Explorer to always show hidden files and folders on a Windows 2000, or Windows XP computer, follow these steps:

  2. Open Outlook Express

  3. Select to Import Messages from the File menu

    • Click File
    • Click Import
    • Click Messages

  4. Define which version of Outlook Express you had on your old computer

    • Once you have selected to Import Messages from the File menu, the Outlook Express Import Wizard will ask you to define the program from which you would like to import email.

    • Select the version of Outlook Express you had on your old computer.
    • Click Next

  5. Define the location of your email messages.

  6. Click Next in the "Location of Messages" screen of the Outlook Express Import Wizard.

    Outlook Express will begin importing the email messages that IntelliMover transferred to your new computer.



Determining Your Idenitity

If you there is more than one string of letters and numbers in your "Identities" folder, use the following directions to dermine which string of letters and numbers is associated with your identity.

  1. Click Start

  2. Click Run

  3. Type regedit in the text field and click OK. This will open the Registry Editor for your computer.

  4. If the registry tree is not expanded (if you only see 'My Computer' in the left of the window), double-click My Computer. This will expand the first level of registry settings for your computer.

  5. Double-click HKEY_CURRENT_USER

  6. Double-click Identities

  7. Click the first string of letters and numbers in the "Identities" folder.

  8. In the right frame of the Registry Editor, you will see a list of registry keys (attributes associated with your identity). One of these keys is named Username. The "Username" key lists the username associated with the string of letters and numbers that the application assigned as your User ID (this key is also listed in the right frame of the Registry Editor).

  9. If the string of letters and numbers that you clicked display your "Username" in the right frame, you know that it is Your User Identity.

  10. If the string of letters and numbers that you clicked do not display your "Username" in the right frame, click the next string. Continue this process until the string that you click displays your "Username" in the right frame. Once you have found the string that displays your "Username", you know that it is Your User Identity
